Siding
The other five sides of your house.
A roof sheds water down. Siding sheds it sideways, in wind-driven rain, which is harder. Replacement and repair in vinyl, fiber cement and cedar, installed by the crews that already know where water goes.
Why a roofer
Siding fails where it meets something else.
Almost no siding job fails in the middle of a wall. It fails at the corners, around windows, where the wall meets the roofline, and at every penetration a hose bib or dryer vent punches through. That is flashing and water management, which is the same problem a roof is, turned ninety degrees.
We wrap the house properly, flash every opening, and detail the roof-to-wall transitions the way we would if we were the ones warrantying the roof, because usually we are. One crew owns the whole exterior, so there is no seam between trades for a leak to hide in and no argument about whose fault it is.
What we install
Three materials, honest tradeoffs.
Vinyl
The value choice, and it has come a long way. Insulated panels, deeper profiles, colors that hold. Right for most homes, and the fastest to install.
Fiber Cement
Heavier, tougher, takes paint beautifully and does not care about heat. Costs more and takes longer to hang, and on the right house it is worth both.
Cedar & Specialty
Real wood siding and shake, repaired or replaced, for the houses where nothing else looks right. Same crews that handle our slate and copper work.
Repairs & Storm Damage
Wind, hail, or a tree limb. We match what is there where we can, and tell you plainly when a section repair will look like a section repair.
While the ladders are up
One mobilization, one standard.
If the roof is coming off anyway, or the gutters are shot, doing it in one visit costs less than doing it in three. We will tell you what actually needs doing now and what can wait a season.
Seamless Gutters
Sized for Virginia thunderstorms, pitched to drain, hung so they stay hung.

Replacement windows and doors, flashed and sealed into the wall properly.
Learn moreRoof Replacement
The cheapest time to redo the exterior is while the roof is already open.

Wind and hail hit siding as hard as shingles. We document both for the claim.

Your options
Three materials, and they are genuinely different products.
Vinyl is the most commonly installed siding in Central Virginia, and modern vinyl is a considerably better product than the material that gave it its reputation decades ago. It does not need painting, it handles our humidity well, and the price to performance ratio is strong. Insulated vinyl adds a rigid foam backing that improves impact resistance, reduces the wavy appearance thin vinyl can get, and adds some thermal benefit.
Fiber cement is heavier, more durable and more expensive, and it takes and holds paint. It resists impact and fire better than vinyl and reads as a more substantial material up close, which is why it appears on higher end homes and on renovations where the original character matters. It also weighs considerably more, which affects installation.
- Vinyl
No painting, good humidity performance, wide color range, and the most economical of the three.
- Insulated vinyl
Foam backed for impact resistance, a flatter appearance and some added thermal value.
- Fiber cement
Heavier and more durable, takes paint, resists impact and fire well, and costs more to buy and to install.
What it costs
What moves a siding number.
We do not publish siding pricing, for the same reason we do not publish roofing pricing: what is behind the existing siding is unknown until some of it comes off, and moisture damage in the sheathing is common enough that quoting before looking would mean revising afterwards.
Siding is also where the difference between a fair estimate and a cheap one usually hides in the trim and flashing detail rather than in the panels. Windows, doors, corners and rooflines are where water gets in, and they are the first thing cut when someone is bidding to a number.
- Material
Vinyl, insulated vinyl or fiber cement. This is the largest single lever, and fiber cement costs more to install as well as to buy.
- Wall area and stories
Surface area plus height. Anything above the second story means more staging and more time.
- What is underneath
Moisture damaged sheathing or rotten trim is common and is not visible until the old siding comes off. We flag it and price it before proceeding.
- Trim and detail
Windows, doors, corners and roof to wall transitions. This is where the labor is and where a cheap estimate usually cuts.
What to expect
How a siding job runs.
Free inspection
We assess the existing siding, trim and any visible moisture damage, discuss material options against the house and how long you plan to be in it, and give you a written estimate.
Written estimate
You get a written estimate with the options laid out and no vague line items. We explain the tradeoffs and give you our honest recommendation, including when the cheaper option is the right one.
Scheduled work
We schedule around you and show up when we said we would. Crews protect landscaping and vehicles, and magnet-sweep for nails at the end of every working day, not just the last one.
Final walk and paperwork
We walk the finished job with you, answer anything still open, and hand over the warranty documentation. Manufacturer coverage gets registered at closeout, because it is not real until it is registered.
Warranty
Two promises, and they are not the same promise.
Siding carries the same two layer structure as a roof. Hardesty warrants the installation for five years. The manufacturer warrants the material, and those terms vary considerably between vinyl, insulated vinyl and fiber cement.
On siding the installation warranty matters more than people expect, because most siding failures are water getting behind the panels at a trim or flashing detail rather than the panels themselves failing.
- 5 yrs
Hardesty's own workmanship warranty on labor. If our installation fails, we come back and fix it.
- Varies
Material coverage is set by the manufacturer and differs substantially between vinyl, insulated vinyl and fiber cement products. We give you the term for what you choose before you sign.
- In writing
You get the term for the exact material you choose, in writing, before you sign anything.
Common questions
Siding questions.
Do you actually do siding, or is it just an add on to roofing?
It is a real part of our business, not an attachment. Siding is a significant share of the work we complete each year across Central Virginia.
Should I choose vinyl or fiber cement?
It depends on the house, the budget and how long you plan to stay. Vinyl is more economical and needs no painting. Fiber cement is more durable, takes paint, and reads as a more substantial material. Neither is simply better and we will give you a straight comparison.
Can you side over the existing siding?
It is sometimes done and we generally do not recommend it, for the same reason we do not roof over shingles. It hides whatever is happening to the sheathing underneath, and moisture damage behind siding is common enough that you want to see it.
What happens if you find rot underneath?
We show you and price the repair before continuing. Damaged sheathing and trim is the most common change from an original siding estimate, which is why we raise it as a possibility up front rather than as a surprise.
Will new siding lower my energy bills?
Insulated vinyl adds some thermal value, but siding is not primarily an energy product and we will not sell it as one. Attic insulation and ventilation generally do more for a Central Virginia home than a siding change will.
Do you replace trim and soffit too?
Yes. Trim, soffit, fascia and the flashing details at windows and rooflines are part of the job, and they are where most siding water problems originate.
How long does siding take?
It depends on the size of the house and what turns up underneath. We give you an expected duration in the written estimate.
Can you match my existing siding for a partial replacement?
Sometimes, though exact matching on weathered siding is often not possible because colors fade and products get discontinued. We will show you what the realistic match looks like before doing the work.
